Today’s Queens speech contained some good measures. We welcome the Brexit statements and its resultant benefits. We welcome the measures to promote more patient safety in hospitals. We welcome the proposals to reform adult social care and to improve care for those with mental health problems. We welcome the enviromental proposals. We welcome proposals to improve digital infrastructure. We don’t support the proposals on crime. When 30% of prisoners come out and re-offend simply keeping them in prison for longer isn’t the answer. Only the CPA has a policy to work with people when they leave prison to give the homes and work and help any with drug or alcohol problems. Where these measures have been tried re-offending has gone down to less than 10%. That will mean fewer victims, fewer people in prison, fewer court cases. We don’t support scrapping the rail franchise system without having something better prepared. What is certain is that British Rail was far far worse than what we have now. We don’t support having to produce ID at polling stations unless identity cards are introduced for all. Without them the 11% without passports or driving licences will lose their vote. We note there is nothing at all in this Queens speech to make Universal Credit work. It maybe in the budget schedueld for 6th November but that is a major omission. There is also nothing in this Queens speech to help people sleeping rough and to reduce the use of foodbanks. That is another major omission. There is also nothing here to reduce family breakdown or reduce the number of abortions more major omissions. CPA policies are very much needed to produce a fairer more moral society.
